IUI

February 04, 2022

Today, the miracle of life can be achieved through a variety of treatment processes; one of which is IUI. IUI is artificial insemination of sperm in the uterus. Due to infertility or low mobility of the sperm, the natural conceiving process is delayed, that is when IUI treatment comes into the picture.

IUI procedure –

Sperm travels from the vagina through the cervix into the uterus. On the other hand, when the ovary releases eggs, the sperm fertilizes the egg. During IUI, the sperms are placed directly into the uterus closer to the egg. This way the chances of pregnancy become higher compared to the natural conceiving process.

IUI is a less expensive fertility treatment for couples who face difficulty getting pregnant. In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is the most commonly used treatment before couples try in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IUI is performed when the couple face difficulty in the following situations –

  • Infertility
  • Low mobility of sperms
  • Low sperm count
  • Meek endometriosis
  • Issues related to ejaculation or erection
  • Same-sex couples wish to conceive
  • A single parent conceiving methodology
  • A couple who want to avoid passing a genetic disorder to their child

There are certain scenarios where IUI is not effective –

  • Medium or severe endometriosis
  • Fallopian tubes blocked or removed
  • Fallopian tube diseases
  • Pelvic infections
  • Men with zero sperm count [ donor sperm can be used in such scenarios]

If you are considering a treatment, then IUI should be your first choice. If it doesn’t work, then the next best treatment is IVF.
